Recipes are easier to alter than you may think. Here are a few ideas to cut some fat and calories from your meals.
Replace 1/2 the oil in cakes, breads, and muffins with applesauce, pumpkin puree, lowfat yogurt, or mashed bananas. You will be surprised how little this changes the taste in your baked goods!
Sautee your vegis and meats in broth instead of oil. Broth is flavorful and close to fat free!
Use whipped butter for spreading-tastes just as good but with significantly less fat.
Use chicken breast instead of legs or thighs. And don't forget to remove the skin.
Bake, broil, grill, poach your proteins- hey everything tastes better on the grill!
Steam or Grill your vegis! Grilled vegi kabobs have quickly become a favorite at our house.
Replace your dinner starch with a vegi
Replace mayo with avocado or mustard. Avocados are still high in fat so use sparingly. But its the good, heart healthy fat.
Use brown rice, whole grain bread and whole grain pasta. Just say no to white foods :)
Anyone else have any food swaps to share?
LOVE the suggestions LindseyLu!
ReplyDeletemashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes...I've tried it once or twice and where it's not TOTALLY the same experience, it's a good swap!
ReplyDeleteIn cream soups, you can use a pureed potato or cauliflower to add thickness and richness without the fat of cream!
