DITCH The Diet Soda!

(does anyone know if this is real? Diet Coke w/ Bacon????)

Today's Tip: Ditch Diet Soda (more from Self Magazine here)

-Diet soda can increase your risk of obesiety

-Diet soda can lower bone mineral density

-Diet soda may increase the risk for kidney function decline

-The aspartame side effects may include: headache, dizziness, mood changes and diarrhea

-Soda intake displaces other healthy beverage intake (ie you drink soda and not water)

A recent study in the International Journal of Obesity showed that artificial sweeteners, like those used in diet sodas, may interfere with the body's natural ability to track your calorie intake based on a food's sweetness. They seem to somehow trick your body into thinking that other sweets are calorie-free, too. The upshot is that your system doesn't always send a "stop, you've had enough" signal and you end up overindulging. Try to limit soda to no more

  2. Eww!! Coke with bacon -NO WAY! A nutritionist told me that soda can half your BMD, and that women need to start taking calcium supplements in their 20's b/c of the caffeine intake! Crazy! So ladies, take calcium w/ vitamin D!

  7. That offends all my senses! I gave up commercial soda almost 2 years ago. I now drink a lot more water and the occasional soda from the heath food store. :)

  9. I gave it up years ago - and I'm glad I did. A good substitute for soda is Perrier + a small amount of juice. My favorite juice to add is Pom Blueberry. Delish! I've also tried squeezing lemon into my Perrier - another good one. BTW, I usually buy a store-brand Perrier and it's just as good.
