Early to Bed, Early to Rise

Keeps a man (or woman) Healthy, Wealthy and Wise

Who knew they were right?

Did you know that lack of sleep affects one’s weight?
Losing sleep can raise levels of hormones linked with appetite and eating behavior. Sleep deprivation lowers leptin, a blood protein that suppresses appetite and seems to affect how the brain senses when the body has had enough food. Sleep deprivation also raises levels of grehlin, a substance that makes people want to eat.

So you’re goal should be to try to get more sleep. I know, easier said than done, right? Gradually try to increase the amount of sleep you get. Instead of going to bed a 2 a.m, go to bed at 1 a.m. Then instead of 1 try to go to bed at midnight until you can squeeze in 7-8 hours a night.

Are you getting enough sleep?  Do you find that it hinders your weight loss progress?

  3. It's so true! I work nights and i really do think part of my weight gain is a result of loss of sleep.

  4. I know the nights that I stay up late with friends are the nights I snack more to keep myself awake. I am sure that adds to the weight loss problem in and of itself! Now I have two reasons to go to bed at a normal hour.

  6. Yeah...hosted a party last night...devoured all the leftovers today and I feel sick!! We stayed up too late and I drank too much beer. Sleepiness equals fatness in my life. I always lose control when I stray from my solid 8.

  7. we try and go to bed between 10- 11 pm, but I do not sleep all night due to a pain condition that has me waking up in discomfort, so I try my best to get that sleep.

Thanks for the great information about this subject Maria.

  8. When I DO get 8 hrs of sleep I feel great the next day. It just doesn't happen very often. On the days I'm sleep deprived, I eat more than I should. Lately (well, for 3 nights anyway) I've been doing a relaxing stretch or yoga workout (DVD) right before bed. It has really improved my sleep! I hope I can keep this going. Time is a factor - I happened to have time this weekend but during the week it's a different story.

  9. I REALLY love to sleep. I think I'm the type of person who needs 9 hours each night. Maybe that will change with age, but my mum's that way too!
